Chapter Eleven

Taye bought the next round of drinks, the toasting growing rowdier by the shot and the dancing hotter and raunchier by the hour. Those of us in risky professions partied hard during down time. Life could end for any of us on our next sortie…or with a wedding.

I gyrated to the beat of the music, not sure which of the five airmen circling me I was dancing with. Maybe I was dancing with all of them. Who cared?

Brody, that’s who cared. I glanced to where he perched on the back of a chair against the wall, his feet on the seat ready to spring into action. Beer glass dangling from his fingers—only his second since trailing me from the bar—he gave me a disapproving look. Smiling, I wagged my mini-skirted ass in his direction.

My squadron mates hooted and hollered, though not one would have dared put a finger on me. Partly because of Brody, but mostly because I was one of the guys. Then again, few of them had ever seen me in my fuck-me togs. Maybe I underestimated their hands-off-a-squadron-mate code. I threw back my head and laughed. Let Brody chew on that possibility every time he flew off-world and left me behind. I was being a very bad girl tonight.

I glanced at Brody. But this time he wasn’t watching me or even the room. He was punching text into his PCD. Who the hell was he communicating with this late at night? Damn it. I wasn’t the one who was supposed to be jealous. He was.

A couple more shots and a beer later, I was dancing on the tables to the delight of all in the bar but one. The door opened, a large, dark figure entered and the number of those not enchanted with my tabletop show rose to two.

I met Joryn’s gaze and stepped too near the corner of the table. It wobbled. I lost my balance and fell into Taye’s arms. He took one look at Joryn and the two hulking bodyguards following him and promptly settled me on my feet.

Joryn’s gaze slid past me to Brody as he strode toward us. The music still pounded its beat from the digital sound system. But the human decibels had lowered considerably. My initial reaction might have been intimidation as well. But my second was irritation. I was still angry at Joryn for getting me into this mess then lying to me about it.

I sashayed over to our tables, poured myself a beer and leaned against the wall beside Brody. Joryn stopped in front of me.

Free hand on my hip, I raised my beer salute-like at Joryn. “Bad form for the groom to attend the bride’s bachelorette party.”

The air seemed to go out of the bar as though everyone held their collective breaths in anticipation of Joryn’s reaction.

“Maybe we’ll start a new tradition,” Joryn said quietly. “A combined bachelor and bachelorette party.”

With that he motioned Boomer for another round and announced, “Looks like it’s my turn to buy.
